Truck Guns & Liability

We are often asked if it is ok to store a firearm in a vehicle. The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no. The idea of a “truck gun” is common. A firearm kept in your vehicle—just in case.

For some, it feels like an added layer of preparedness. Something available if needed beyond the home. But there is a side of this conversation that doesn’t get enough attention. The simple reality that responsibility doesn’t stop when the firearm leaves your house.

The Convenience Factor

Keeping a firearm in a vehicle can seem practical. You are mobile, you are out in the world, and having access to a defensive tool feels like an extension of being prepared. But vehicles are not secure environments. They are, by design, temporary spaces. And more importantly, they are frequent targets for theft.

The Reality of Vehicle Break-Ins

Firearms stolen from vehicles are a significant source of guns used in crimes.

In many cases, those firearms were:

  • Left unsecured
  • Stored in plain sight
  • Or hidden in ways that are easily discovered

A locked car is not the same as secure storage. Windows break. Locks fail. And theft can happen quickly. Securing your firearm is your responsibility.

Legal and Personal Liability

If a firearm is stolen from your vehicle and later used in a crime, that can create serious consequences.

At a minimum, you may be dealing with:

  • Law enforcement involvement
  • Questions about how the firearm was stored
  • Potential civil liability, depending on circumstances

Even when no laws are broken, the situation can become complicated very quickly.

Secure Storage in a Vehicle

If you choose to keep a firearm in your vehicle, security matters.

That means:

  • Using a dedicated vehicle safe or lockbox
  • Securing it to the frame or a fixed point
  • Keeping it out of sight at all times

Just as important, avoid routine patterns that make it predictable where and when a firearm is left unattended.

Do You Need It There?

This is the question that often gets skipped. Is the firearm in your vehicle serving a clear purpose, or is it there out of habit or convenience?

For many people, on-body carry when appropriate—or securing the firearm at home—may be a more controlled option. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but there should be a reasoned decision.

The Bottom Line

A firearm in your vehicle comes with the same responsibilities as one in your home—arguably more. The environment is less controlled, the risks are higher, and the consequences of a mistake can extend well beyond you.

At C2 Tactical, we emphasize thinking through the full picture—where your firearm is, how it’s secured, and what risks come with it. Because responsible ownership isn’t just about having access. It is about maintaining control, wherever that firearm is.
